Canon Photo 5 Competition 2009

Canon Photo5 is on again! I was a finalist the first year and a category winner last year and very excited to have another go. This year there was a low light category, a close up category of 100s and 1000s, a portrait of black paper glasses, liquid to splat and a few lens hood to create bokeh and my entries are below. Good luck everyone!

Lee and Cam!

I was so thrilled when my Lee from Luvlee Photography asked me to do her engagement shoot! Firstly she is an amazing photographer herself and secondly, she is such a fun person and up for lots of laughs! It was great to to get to know Cam as well and I wish you all the very best for your upcoming wedding! And Lee has actually imported her wedding photographers from the States for her big day – the fabulous team from The Image is Found is flying in to shoot their big day so keep an eye out for those amazing photographs.

First up we found this gorgeous old abandoned house to play with…

Then it was picnic time for the last few afternoon rays of sunlight…

Until Lee decided it was a good time for photographs UNDER the picnic blanket ;)

I had to include this last photograph as well…. Lee is a crafty kind of chick and had this around her neck and I asked her who it was and she said that ‘It’s me and Cam, when we get old’ – how cute is that!

Finalist for Shoot the Chef 2009

I just got an email tonight from Fairfax Media telling me I am a finalist in Shoot the Chef 2009.

All the finalists will be displayed in Sean’s Kitchen at Star City from the end of September. Some prints will be appearing in the special edition of Good Living 29th September. I have also been invited to the launch of Sydney International Food Festival at Star City where the winner will be announced … and if last year is anything to go by, the food is utterly fabulous! I am so pleased this entry made it through, as it is really a restaurant close to my heart. So get down there and show your support and tell Dominic I sent you :)

Title: The Art of Schnitzel
The iconic restaurant, Bill and Toni’s in East Sydney has been serving Sydney siders for at least 35 years. I met Nick, their Head Chef and spent a couple of hours talking to him about what he does there and watching him work. He has amazing hands and a quick smile and shared some great stories with me. I really wanted to focus on the famous schnitzels they prepare by hand on a daily basis.

It’s 4am and Nick is explaining to me how he cuts the schnitzel. He is actually unaware that I am taking his photograph as the camera is at my hip.

Finalist again with Smile Competition

Another bit of fun I like to have every year is put in my favourite happy snaps for the Smile Competition. This is a different type of photography competition that is not based on technical skill but focuses more on the content. Last year I was lucky enough to take out the National grand prize … and was a really fun experience!

This year’s entry has been one of my favourite recent snaps ever… You can also vote for it at www.smilephotos.com.au – fill out your details and chose Roselands Centro and this photo is called ‘Born to Fly’ and is no.12. You will also be in the running for a $5k shopping spree too hurrah!

Shoot the Chef Photography Competition 2009

Last year I was lucky enough to be a finalist last year in the Sydney Morning Herald Shoot the Chef Photography Competition 2008 and have just found out that I have made it through the first round of judging for 2009.

My subject choice this year was Bill and Toni’s Restaurant in East Sydney (72-74 Stanley St). My husband and I have eaten at this restaurant for at least 15 years and its been serving Sydney siders for at least 35 years. It is an iconic Sydney restaurant if there ever was one, that has certainly stood the test of time. I met Nick at 4am last month and spent a couple of hours talking to him about what he does there and watching him work. He has amazing hands and a quick smile and shared some great stories with me. I really wanted to focus on the fabulous schnitzels they prepare by hand on a daily basis – mainly because most of Sydney would’ve eaten one… and if they haven’t, drop everything and get down there right now!

In the image, it is 4am and Nick is explaining to me how he cuts the schnitzel. He is actually unaware that I am taking his photograph as the camera is at my hip.

Looking for inspiration…

My phojo always seems to slide south a bit during winter, so recently I have been filling my inspiration book with things from the world, far and wide… although I always seem to come back to music. I actually saw this video a while back and it just makes me feel happy when I see it, so free. It has it all – the joy of a simple day, sweet music, going too fast to stop, time alone which I crave, afternoon golden heat, sunflare and just pure freedom … it makes me want to go out and just shoot all day by the beach. Bring on spring! Music and video by Goldfrapp, buy it here
