Should a friend or a Pro shoot your wedding? | sydney wedding photographer

If you are seriously tossing up between a friend to photograph your wedding or hiring a Professional Photographer to do it, please read this interesting article below. I really like how they have showed the friend’s photos right next to the professional’s version so you can truly see the difference in standard.

“I consider myself a pretty good amateur photographer. I’ve taken a couple of classes, I have a nice Nikon D60 and, as a professional travel writer, I’ve even had a few of my shots make magazine covers and pages. If you didn’t budget for a professional photographer at your wedding, I’m the friend you might call to take pictures.

So when Seattle Bride sent me to the late-winter wedding of Vicky Wu and Chris Nicoll to shoot alongside Joey Hong of John & Joseph Photography, a local award-winning team of two brothers who have been shooting commercial, fashion and wedding photography for more than eight years, I was curious to see how well I could keep up with a seasoned pro.

If you don’t have time to read the whole article, please find my fav excerpt here:
I now disagree more than ever with the digital-age adage that “now everyone is a photographer.” Tens of thousands of dollars in education, equipment and experience separate me from the pros. Professional photographers, like any other artists or business owners, need to spend money to make money. When you hire them, you’re helping them pay for their investments.

“Photography is a very equipment-intensive business, and the equipment is expensive,” says Scott Squire of NonFiction Weddings, a Seattle-based photography team with 10 years of experience. To each wedding, he and his partner bring six or seven top-drawer lenses, a handful of strobes, three camera bodies, one backup and innumerable accessories. (In contrast, if my equipment had failed, my backup would have been my camera phone :) )

Palm Beach Dolphins | Sydney Wedding Photographer

How I love Sydney… it always manages to put on a show! These dolphins were completely exhilarating to witness and a great show for our California cousins visiting us.  I was lucky enough to have just put on my 135L to capture it as they were gone as quickly as they had arrived.

Sydney wedding photographer | The craziest bridal entrance I have ever seen

This wedding video is all over the tv and internet at the moment, I have never seen anything like it and not sure it will catch on … but all I know is that there are many churches all over the world who are very very nervous right now ;)

Stop Motion from caspix on Vimeo.

My first stop motion animation … the kids mucking around in the park in the winter sun! -

Shot with 5Dmark2 + over 1,000 stills spliced together. Images are SOOC (straight out of camera jpgs)

I have been thinking about making one for the last 6 months or so and it was surprisingly easy and so much fun! Leave a comment, would love to hear what you think!

Looking for inspiration…

My phojo always seems to slide south a bit during winter, so recently I have been filling my inspiration book with things from the world, far and wide… although I always seem to come back to music. I actually saw this video a while back and it just makes me feel happy when I see it, so free. It has it all – the joy of a simple day, sweet music, going too fast to stop, time alone which I crave, afternoon golden heat, sunflare and just pure freedom … it makes me want to go out and just shoot all day by the beach. Bring on spring! Music and video by Goldfrapp, buy it here

A 7 year old’s idea of heaven…

Ever wondered what a seven year old’s idea of heaven is? I found out today … bowling, best friends, disco lights, neon glow bowling shoes, blue jelly, blue cake, hot dogs, blue tongues, silly party hats, more hot dogs, tickets, games, racing cars, sugar, shouting, art pencils, books and buddies! Remember those happy carefree days… but now I think mummy has to sleep for a week!

The ACOCP Exhibition Launch Night

The exhibition launch went so well, we had some great speakers. A wonderful social worker who has been in the industry for more than 20 years spoke about how valuable our work was in helping the grieving process for these families. A mother and father who had lost their precious twins flew up from Melbourne to speak about how important the ACOCP was from a parent’s perspective. There was not a dry eye in the house after that wonderful talk. I spoke as well as NSW Coordinator to let everyone know my own experiences and the path with NSW was heading in the future. Here are some photos from the launch night. I have just been advised that there has been such a great response that they have extended the exhibition’s stay until the 8th July! So spread the word and get down there and get to know our special families.
